Lesbian Chic, LA Style

After recent discussion here at LP about sexuality and stereotyping in tv, I’m interested to see Rob Corr has a good post on an spray about The L Word.

Incidentally, can anyone think of an Australian tv series with a continuing character who’s a queer woman? Preferably one who doesn’t get killed or turn evil?

Elsewhere: More at David’s place.

You know what, I lived in San Francisco (and briefly in LA) for some years and the show isn’t that unrealistic – I worked as a photographer and in a gallery.

Also, if Irant’s still reading, I think that site about the Lesbian Evil/Dead Stereotype has a point about Willow’s portrayal.

Yeah there was one lesbian character on Paradise Beach (the name completely escapes me!) who married a Canadian to keep him in the country. He was in love with her and begged her to try the “other side” but it didn’t work out and he ended up living in a bizarre menage a trois situation. Weird but she didn’t kill anyone or get brutally annhiliated.

And then there were always the romances “on the inside” in Prisoner!

Speaking as a comic book fan, Catwoman is the one of the few vaguely lesbianish characters I can think of. There’s a hint of something in Batman:Year One and in Batman: Hush there’s a suggestion that she gets seduced by Poison Ivy (another bisexual Batman villain) – I should note though that Catwoman has recently ‘turned good’ and has her own comic book series now.

I can’t remember either, Antonio, but the actress later turned up on All Saints… Sadly, I was a big fan of Paradise Beach – a bit like Chances, it failed commercially so got turned into high camp rubbish. One of the unintended effects of the Australian content regulations!

    Prisoner – ah, memories!

Also, as I said at Rob’s place just now, There?Äôs no conflict between having fun and being political.

And, I think I?Äôm in love with Katherine Moennig aka Shane. She can tousle my locks anytime!

Jason, there’s Dykes To Watch Out For, as mentioned on the other post, though it’s not really that sort of comic book. I always thought Mystique in the X-Men had a bit of a lesbian tinge. And then – there’s the immortal goddess Aeon Flux – soon to be a major motion picture as they say with Aeon played by Charlize Theron. The link is to piccies.

Or piccie, Kim. The gallery’s here.

Sadly, I don’t think the movie will be anywhere near as good as the manga inspired series. Imagine Aeon the Monican anarchist dominatrix secret agent having a “handler”. Hollywood dumbs down another brilliant source!

Though Frances MacDormand could be my handler if she wanted to. Stop me – I’m having Kate Beckinsale identification fantasies! [link also to photo]. Right, off to watch Laurel Canyon on dvd!

Note also the contrast in costume between manga Aeon and Charlize Aeon.

Wow. I don’t usually find Charlize Theron attractive, but… wow. And Shane’s hot, too. Kim, you have awesome taste in women!

Well to me, the best thing about Aeon Flux was the complete stoned surrealism of the thing (“Hang on, the baby just split in half, again!”). Plus the ambivently bad guy was called ‘Trevor’. Can’t see these attribute surviving translation to the big screen.

It’ll just end up as fucked up as “Tank Girl” or “Modesty Blaise” – without even a smidgen of “Barbarella”‘s sleazy and zany charm. Look, Hollywood’s run by smart nerds who got into the business, as Peter Townsend said about pop music, for the pussy and the power. Strange ambigious women make them feel…uncomfortable.

So no, I’m not holding my breath for a decent Aeon Flux movie out of Hollywood. On the other hand, Luc Bresson as producer, Chris Cunningham as director, a brillant unknown as the lead and some Channel 4/ Studio Canal money and there might be a bright stylish little europudding flick there.

On the subject of comic books, I just found out that my swing dancing teacher writes Batman stories for a living.

I fear you’re right, Nabs, though if it has the effect of alerting more people to the anarchistic and surrealistic wonders of the Aeon series, that at least will be something.

Yep, they’re for the comics. He’s currently trying to revive the Riddler.

Thinking about it Kim, there is a point that taken in context of how lesbians have been portrayed is correct. Taken in the context of Buffy though, tragic end to a romance is not uncommon (and with deadly consequences for someone) and I think the writers of piece downplayed that far too much. I think there may have been some issues with Amber Benson (I never did understand why she was a “full” scooby) and the writers did take a cheap way out that would upset fans.

I’m not sure that I have explained myself well so it is off to Happy Hour and Dinner.

cool Robert! I’ve actually got that particular ‘Legends of the Dark Knight’ series. If he’s trying to revive the Riddler he’s done a pretty good job.
